Mobile App Design for Sound Puzzles

Sound Puzzles is an iPhone game the objective of which is to record a sound clip and obfuscate it by applying affects built into the game. The modified version of the sound clip is then sent to a different player who needs to guess what was originally recorded.

Problem

With the object of the app devoted to recording and manipulating sound, it was up to the UI of Sound Puzzles to place it as a game rather than as a sound recorder app.

Approach

I planned out UX design that facilitated intuitive and streamlined navigation through the app. I then created wireframes for each screen of the game. Finally, I designed a logo and other assets that comprised the UI design of the game and worked with a team of developers to integrate my design into the game. Once the codebase was put together, I drove a round of usability testing with a group of beta testers and tweaked the UI based on their feedback.

Solution

I utilized colorful, fun and playful visual cues to frame Sound Puzzles as a game. I aimed for a design that was bold and vivid and alluded to its wild side. The result was a set of screens that could not be mistaken for anything other than a game. Imagery associated with sound such as treble clefs, notes, microphones and play buttons among other visualizations was used throughout the app to further define the game as one based around sound recordings.
